Why Use Access Control?

Access Control enables you to control who has access to your building.

Locks and keys also allow you to secure your building but when keys are lost or stolen, the inconvenience and expense of changing locks and re-issuing keys can be considerable. Keys may also be copied, creating even more security risks.

All businesses, whether small, medium or large, have assets that need to be protected from theft. There is also the issue of protecting staff and their property. It is common in buildings that are secured by locks and keys for doors to be left unlocked all day. This opens up the possibility of theft and malicious damage.

Electronic access control provides the most efficient and convenient way of securing your building and assets. Installing an access control system means that you will never have to change a lock again. ID Cards or Pin Codes are issued to allow access through the controlled doors and are easily turned off from the system if they are lost, stolen or just not returned by someone who leaves your company. Turning off ID Cards or Pin Codes will not allow access through the controlled doors.

Access control can also offer flexible control over user's access rights. For example, all staff can gain access through the main door of a building but access to internal areas may be restricted to those who have a specific need to be there. Access may also be restricted by time, only granting access to particular users at certain times of day or night.

Standalone Access Control

This type of system may be used to control access on one or many independent doors in a building. Access is gained by using a PIN code or by ID cards, depending on which type of reader is chosen. These systems are programmed at each door. If PIN code or ID cards need to be turned off or codes need to be changed, this action must be completed at every door on the system with a hand held device or through the keypad on the reader. This type of programming can take more time to program than having a PC based system.

Typical Applications:

  • Small Business Premises
  • Sports Clubs
  • Storage Units
  • Any small to medium sized site requiring access control

PC Based Access Control

Referred to as "PC Based" or "networked" access control, these systems may be used to control one to dozens of doors in a building. Access is gained by using a PIN code or ID cards. A PC based access control system offers central control via a network or by daisy chaining them together. This means that commands given at the PC are sent to each of the doors then a PIN code or ID card can be turned off from all of the doors instantly. This type of system allows you to grant different permissions for individuals or groups of users and many systems allow control of additional buildings. Reports may also be generated to see who went where & when. PC based systems are being used to control other services within buildings. For example, intruder alarms, fire doors, lifts & lighting.

Typical Applications:

  • Small/Medium Premises
  • Large Corporate Premises
  • Multiple-Site Premises
  • Government Buildings
  • Universities
  • Sports Clubs
  • Car Parks

Interchangeable Cores

An interchangeable core, or IC core, is a compact keying mechanism in a specific "small format" figure-eight shape. Unlike a standard key cylinder, which is accessible for combining only via locking device disassembly, an interchangeable mechanism relies upon a specialized "control" key for insertion and extraction of the essential (or "core") combining components.

Interchangeable cores can be extracted from one lock type and then installed into another without requiring the removal or disassembly of any single component. These units are readily adapted for master keying systems and can be set up with spare cores and keys for quick replacement when security is compromised, such as when a key is lost or stolen or when a personnel change takes place.
